Fire alarm!

Today Tiny and I had another relatively short walk – 17km, as I have a VC meeting tonight so wanted enough time in the afternoon for a nap.

The walk was lovely but sadly no cafes on the way, so we were pleased to get here, to Najera, in good time for an early lunch tortilla and orange juice. We had loaded up yesterday and this morning, by managing to try out a few different bars in our lovely previous village, Navarrete, where our Spanish family had shared lunch with us before driving back to Madrid.

We had just got into the apartment, at 2pm, and I was trying to figure out how the washing machine worked, when we had an urgent knock at the door. There was a fire in the apartment upstairs and we had to evacuate!

Pausing only to find some shoes and passports (I’ve learned from my last fire alarm, when I forgot both my phone and my shoes), we got out quick smart. We could definitely smell smoke, and the people from the upper floors were coughing as they pushed past us (Tiny was walking too slowly for them).

Luckily, the hostel from which we have rented the apartment was 50m away, and had beers, so we whiled away the next hour in the park next to the apartment, trying to figure out what the fire brigade was actually doing.

After an hour, we were let back in, no smell of smoke, everything untouched!

Now I’m just waiting for my washing to finish before having that long awaited siesta.
