Witches, beer, and details

The Harz Mountains are renowned in Germany for their association with witches – who traditionally gather annually on a mountaintop down the road – and other creatures of myth.

We headed out of town today to hike in the foothills through forest and round lakes. It was a lovely walk, spoiled only slightly by the fact the forests have been severely damaged by an invasive beetle which has left them looking like they’ve been clear-felled in parts.

Back in Goslar, after a rather hair-raising bus ride, we had schnitzel for lunch accompanied by locally brewed beer. A great many of the myths and folk stories about the Harz feature beer, so trying the local was more than appropriate.

Goslar has proven to be a delight. Everywhere you turn the ancient houses have beautiful little features – slate walls, little cartoons, crooked beams.

It’s enchantingly pretty and filled with captivating details.
