Tapering (well that’s my story)
We started this walk with the aim of going from Maroubra to Dee Why. Why Dee Why?
Well the romantic answer might be that it’s a bit of a representation of my family in Australia. My father lived in the Eastern Suburbs when he arrived here in the 1960s. I was born in Woolloomooloo and first was dunked in the Harbour at Nielsens Park. We lived in Cremorne when I was a teenager, then my parents lived in Manly for years. After my father died, my mother moved to Dee Why. Good story arc, isn’t it?
But that’s not why we ended up in Dee Why. It’s because I got Dee Why and Narrabeen mixed up. The later is 25km from Manly and made conceptual sense as another 20-something kilometre day. Dee Why is a pleasant 8km walk from Manly. Woops.
Now I know we could have just kept walking. But we had a target and going past it seemed greedy. And our legs were feeling like Dee Why was sufficient for a taper on the fourth day. So we had a lovely walk by the Ocean to finish of our homemade multi-day walk.
