Back on track

So the big news from yesterday was that Jennifer arrived in Seville. She got in early enough that we could enjoy a drink in a little bar on the street while the local brotherhood people paraded past in the ancient finery – which, by the way, is largely velvet and looks horribly unsuited to the heat.

Today we started relatively early to avoid the Sun and walked to the Plaza de Espana. The Plaza is probably the most emblematic site in Seville and there’s no question it’s very beautiful. Slightly unfortunately, they were in the midst of setting up for a music festival and so getting a line of sight that didn’t involve scaffolding, cranes or mobile toilets was a tad tricky.

We strolled back via the river and the Torre de Oro – the custom tower where the Spanish State took their cut of the rivers of looted gold that was flowing from South America. Our looping walk took us to a little hole-in-the-wall that has been dishing up churros for decades. The churros were surprisingly, and pleasingly, light (for versions of ‘light’ that revolve around deep-fried dough).

This evening we had tapas at a bar called Sal Gordo (recommended by Trent). It turned out to be have an amazing modern take on tapas – pork donut, bacalao with honey foam…

Finally we went up the setas – the largest wooden structure in the world. It was created as a shade structure and has become a destination, not leats for the light show and views of the city.
