Wining

Spanish wine can be quite boggling – to me at least. There is a focus on grape types, not all of which are immediately obvious to me, overlaid with protected region names and less protected but well-known almost regions.

I have become adept at asking for a glass of dry white wine which, unless there is some local speciality, usually means a glass of verdejo.

So I approached this evening’s excursion with interest. A wine tasting in L’Umbracle.

L’Umbracle is a landscaped promenade at the City of Arts and Sciences complex, featuring a series of white arched trellises that support climbing plants and native Mediterranean vegetation. Beneath the arches runs a walkway lined with sculptures.

The event was all about Requena, a famous wine making region near Valencia which has been producing wine for 2500 years. It’s focus is the bobal grape – and there you go, another new one for me.

It was a fun evening tasting wines followed by a visit to a bar with Theresa, Petra, and Jesus. It’s now 3am and I am a barely functional human being. Fun night.
