Salt and vines

What a glorious day.

We hired electric bikes today and rode south to Gruissan. It’s a lovely ride along the canal and then through vineyards. The final part is beside salt flats with towering hills of harvested salt.

The town itself is an unusual layout of concentric streets circling a central tower. The combination of red roofs and blue water and sky is just lovely.

We found a little bistro to have lunch. Jennifer had local sausage, I went wild and had baked camembert – I’m not sure that a day’s riding will deal with the calories in that little beauty.

After lunch we visited the tower and then rode down to the Mediterranean, just because it was there.

The ride back started to reveal how long it had been since I had ridden a bike. The bumpy paths started to wear thin, in spite of the beautiful scenery. We did see flamingos though and that made a bit of pain worthwhile.

Now speaking of pain I have to explain today’s parallel activity. Just before we left we got a message from Aunt Tiny to say she had fallen over and hit her head and was in a medical center, which then involved ambulances and hospitals as the day progressed. So throughout the day we were coordinating making sure she was OK. She’s now alright and on her way to Madrid to be looked after by Bob and Ana.

For us though it was just an amazingly beautiful day, one of those perfect moments you sometimes stumble into.
