The moral hazard

Day 2 and the moral hazard becomes real as we walked back to home.

It rained overnight and that cleared away both the bushfire haze and the humidity. The weather remained blustery as we set out after a nice breakfast.

We were only about 3km in when we realised my water bladder was leaking – which was both uncomfortable and annoying. It was less than a disaster as we’re walking though central Sydney and there were plenty of opportunities to get a drink. (Later investigation revealed a tear high up which only started leaking after I’d re-packed more tightly this morning, and so forced the water higher up the bladder. I haven’t used it since the Larrapinta but must have damaged it on the way home from the Northern Territory.)

The high tides and on-shore wind caused us some issues as we were forced off the beaches and had to find alternate routes. That in turn meant we spent more time behind the houses than in front of them than is usual on this section. The views of the Bridge and Opera House are lovely when you get them – the views of the back of the multi-million dollar houses that aren”t sharing those views, not so much.

Because we were walking towards home, the last section took us disturbingly close to the Metro. But we were tough and stayed the course. Another 24km added to the tally.

Getting up tomorrow morning and walking out from home might be the real test. The nice thing about the plan as it’s playing out though is that Jennifer can go to choir tonight and I can go to my Spanish lesson – although both require a bit more walking.
