Lübeck in sunlight

We awoke this morning to find the clouds and fog had flown and a weak, winters Sun was shining down. The obvious difference it made was that the facade of the ancient town hall opposite our apartment is covered with glazed bricks which had meant little the last few days but which suddenly made sense when they turned opalescent in the light.

We spent the morning in the museum contained within the gate towers that are, apparently, the World-famous symbols of Lübeck. The towers were built in the 1470s and the builders probably didn’t anticipate that over 500 years the lack of central foundations would lead to the towers gently subsiding towards the middle. The result is picturesque from the outside and disconcerting from the inside.

The gloves and all other cold-weather gear were needed when we went up to the top of the old St Peter’s church for a very pretty view of the town. Very pretty and very cold.

The afternoon we split up. Jennifer and I failed to hire bikes; and consoled ourselves with gluwein. Skye and Lea went op-shopping for clothes. Minerva wandered about exploring.
