Shipwreck

It was the year 1628 and Sweden launched the heaviest armed ship in the world. It sailed for 10 minutes and promptly sank to the bottom of Stockholm harbour. There it sat until 1960 when, and this blows me away, it was raised and floated again.

The ship was the Vasa and it is now housed in a wonderful Museum. I can honestly say the first sight of the ship was literally breathtaking. It would have been a thing of beauty in any era, but combined with its age and astonishing state of preservation we were blown away.

Today was clear, which meant a great view of the harbor as we caught the ferry over to the museum. But clear also meant freezing cold. The streets were icy and there were icicles clinging to surfaces everywhere. All very pretty.

Skye went vintage clothing shopping and bought a very stylish leather jacket. Might have been more useful a couple of weeks ago as tonight is our last night in Stockholm. Last night so we’re going out for a Swedish meal – think moose meatballs and reindeer roulade.
