Welcome to Marrakech

Today was mostly spent on travelling. Minerva left first to fly home via Frankfurt and Seoul. Then we left Skye at the airport (after buying her lunch which was delivered by a robot) while she waited for her flight to Bangkok. We braved Ryanair and flew direct to Marrakech.

Robot server – didn’t get a tip

We were met by Samir who is going to be driving us around Morocco for the next week. He seems lovely and interesting. He drove us into the old town and then left us with instructions to ‘Follow this man.’ We followed the man, not least because he had our bags in a wheelbarrow, down confrontingly empty alleyways and were eventually deposited at our hotel in an old Riad. The Riads are houses based around a central courtyard and ours seems charming.

But food was the main game. So we went back out into the little, empty alleyways and made our way to Jemaa el-Fna which is like the main square in the old Medina. There we found some excellently filling couscous and marveled at the sudden contrast with Stockholm. The small streets, the men wearing wool djellaba, speeding motorcycles, wheelbarrows of goods, tiny market stalls selling handmade goods. It all seems charming and very different – we’re looking forward to exploring tomorrow.
