Bob Caledonia

We are in New Caledonia.

Our experience of a few hours has been limited. We’ve seen our house, the supermarket and the 45 minute drive from the airport.

That limited experience, however, has driven home to me – brought up in Scotland – how desperate James Cook was getting with naming things by the time he got here. I guess he’d already used up Wales. But, really, Scotland and a palm-fronded tropical paradise is a stretch. Then again sailors looking at the dugongs that New Caledonia is famous for saw mermaids, so desperation will drive you to strange places.

But speaking of names, we did find a beer named Bob, much to Bob’s delight.
