Getting lost

In the beginning Pamplona was your basic hill-fort. Then the Romans came along and made it a significant settlement. The Moors washed up on its walls and the Christians settled in for good and built a cathedral. People started popping into the cathedral on their way to Santiago.

A bunch of enterprising French people saw an opportunity and made a neighbouring settlement selling stuff to pilgrims. Both settlements had their own walls and a habit of throwing things at each other when dissatisfied with the competition. A third non-aligned settlement grew up with its own walls, but less throwing.

Eventually the local king decided all this throwing was not doing anyone any good and built one huge set of walls around the whole thing and made them all sign a treaty and become one happy family.

But the French lot were still competitive and built a church. That church’s major claim to fame is that it’s a foot higher than the cathedral.

All of that is a long introduction to today’s project of visiting the church of San Saturino. The introduction is long because the church was closed so I failed to see anything beyond the facade.

Plan B turned into wandering blindly about the back streets of Pamplona in a determined effort to get lost and see new things. I found some lovely little streets, a huge community garden, and lots of pretty average graffiti. Great stroll though.
